Walter Hartwell opened his first soda fountain in Milwaukee in 1919 with a hand-crank freezer, a marble counter and one rule: make it properly or don't make it. The recipe book outlived the shop by a long way.
A century later, that book came west. Hartwell's opened in Gilbert, Arizona — not as a franchise stamped out of a manual, but as a parlor built around those original recipes. A handful of close friends went in together as owners, which is the short explanation for why the people behind the counter actually seem glad you came.
The rule hasn't changed since Milwaukee: quality first, quantity second. Real ingredients, traditional methods, and a board of thirty-four flavors that has to earn its space.

"Blue Moon in a fresh waffle cone. That's the whole review. The cone was still warm when they handed it over."
"They let my kids sample about nine flavors without a single sigh. Superman won, obviously. We'll be back Friday."
"The Butter Pecan tastes like the one my grandfather used to bring home. I did not expect to get a little emotional over ice cream."
"The hot fudge is actually hot, the whipped cream is actually whipped, and the cherry is not optional. That's a sundae."
"Came in for one scoop, left with a pint of Sea Turtle and a plan to come back for the Cool Mint Cookie."
"Cute shop, quick line, friendly crew. The striped walls make for great photos if that's your thing."
"Hand-spun malt so thick the straw stood up on its own. Worth the drive from the west side."
"Our Friday night tradition now. The strawberry has real strawberries in it, which apparently is rare."
